Movement - The Brazilian job
In 2001 drum and bass was wasn’t a novel musical movement. It wasn’t rebellious. To some it has lost its edge. Its musical vitality. Its spirit had been diluted.
In 2001 brazilian drum and bass dj Marky, aka Marco Antonio Silva, released a 12” single, Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você, a track from the compilation called the Brazilian job.
The Brazilian job was a fresh and funky drum and bass compilation that was light and easy on the ear, without being too cheesy. The A side contains a lounge mix, while the flip side, the cosmonautics mix, adds the drum and bass flavour.
Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você featured on an album made by legendary brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Elis Regina, released in 1974. On Dj Marky’s release the song is not sampled, but we hear the voice of the lovely Fernanda Porto. The track is made by the acoustic guitar, played by Ulysses Rocha and miss Fernanda Porto’s voice.
The A side of this 12” is a calm and reserved affair, as the lounge mix tag would suggest. The flip side though is what caught the ear of this listener back in 2001.
The acoustic guitar before Fernanda Porto steps in sets the tone. Then the lovely portugese voice that I still cannot comprehend. And then the beats kick in. Not unruly, but spicy enough to make the feet want to move. And that voice! Happy dancing is a necessity when on the dancefloor with this track spinning.
Those were the days!
