Burial - Burial [Hyperdub]
There is no way to deny the fact that Burial has made an unforgettable album. The track ‘Distant Lights’ kick-off this amazing dubstep LP with a bass sound that comes flowing to-an-fro with a mesmerising set of brass sounds and a whispering voice that lures you into a dark place. If one enters a dark room, one cannot see much but in time one’s vision increaces as what seemed to bea dark void becomes a distinguishable. This album stars off being a massively dark space filled with bass, but with a few listenings the different layers shine through.
Track number three ‘Spaceape’ featuring Spaceape himself is a slow gem with a spoken word layering that fuses the vocal parts of dub-reggae and the modern sound of London. If Reggae would have been born in London, this would have been its sound. ‘Wounder’ is a great slow dubstep tune with a haunting collage of the two-step beat with an eerie minimalistic synth melody that makes the track slowly drift by. ‘Southern Comfort’ is another track that brings out the wonderful sounds of bass. In this track the bass is more than just a fat beat. It’s the melodic backbone of the track.
‘U Hurt Me’ brings an arabic feel to a two-step soaked track. This track also contains melodies that makes you forget about the heavy beats for a while, but as they fade away, the might of the rhythm comes to the fore. A simple and great dubstep track that strips away any unwanted layer of sound. ‘Broken Home’ is filled with broken beats. Not broken beats as in Breakbeat, but a slight alteration from a two-step rhythm that makes a listener want to pay more attention. The track has the feel of a car with one wheel that is not completely round.
The album is truly enjoyable, and Soundscaping warmly recommends it!
