Pleq - The metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is a record that trickles along with a slow pace, and besides a few more livid tracks towards the end of the record it sits nicely in the background, if not listened to actively. This type of music can easily fall into the category of relaxing background sound. It is not meant as a negative trademark, or a sign of bad craftsmanship. It is merely the nature of the beast.
The atmospheric sounds and the crackling of the digital backdrops sets a certain frame for the record. It is a dreamy texture that is being presented to us, only broken up a few times with sounds of violins, drums and some vocals. The breaks from the atmospheric haze is so withdrawn that it might have been a better idea not to include them. On the other hand, some minor distractions are always welcome, if monotony was not the guiding star of the musical composition.
The title of the album signals change, and in some respect that change does occur. Albeit not poignantly. The change is noticeable, yet in many ways subtle.
Metamorphosis is in many ways a new take on “lounge music”, with the added modern ingredients. It is a good record for that low revving feeling, and there is a sense that Pleq is holding back. The question of which direction Pleq will evolve is bound to be answered sooner rather then later, as he is a productive producer. A new album is just about to be released, and Pleq is about to embark on a long tour of mainly his native Poland. Keep an eye out for this artist.
