Various Production - The World Is Gone
Label: XL Recordings
Year: 2006
Format: CD/LP
After the groundbreaking full length album from Burial there have been several LP-s released that has brought attention to dubstep beyond its usual public. The Kode9 and Skream! albums has helped to expand the dubstep community whilst expanding the genre. This full length album takes another big strive in promoting the genre of dubstep, and expanding its musical limits.

The Various Production album ‘The World Is Gone’ is so diverse that its dubstep roots are not always visible. Tracks such as ‘Circle of Sorrow’, ‘Deadman’ and ‘Fly’ are tracks that could just as easily have been on a progressive pop record. But they are not. And because they are to be found amongst bass driven dark tracks such as ‘Today’ that the album quality truly shines through. I cannot say enough good things about this album without sounding unimaginative, but the fact of the matter is that this albums has been playing in my stereo for the best part of two weeks and I still have not got bored with it. That must count for something. The diversity aspect of the album cannot be emphasised too often. The gentle and frail voice filled and melody driven tracks are being followed by edgy dark rhythms that envoke the urban gloom that dubstep captures so well. The catchy tunes make this record a great gateway into the everexpanding musical category called dubstep. ‘Sweetness’ and ‘Today’ have both an edge and a welcoming sound to them. The female voice on this record is a good counterpoint to the deep bass rhythms. If you have not been persuaded yet by this article, then the exelent video clip of my favorite track on the album ‘Hater’ might change your opinion. Enjoy!
