Beneva vs Clark Nova - Flotsam/Jetsam

Beneva v Clark Nova - Flotsam/Jetsam
Artist: Beneva vs Clark Nova
Label: Fenêtre Records
Year: 2007
Format: 3" CD

Here comes the first of a new series of 3” CD EPs from Oslo-based electronica label, Fenêtre Records, featuring two long-stretched ambient pieces from Oslo-based electronica duo Beneva and Clark Nova (real names: Rudi Simmons and Frank Benjamin Finger) on a release entitled Flotsam/Jetsam.

The two compositions, Part 1 and Part 2, demonstrate Beneva and Clark Nova’s great ability to compose emotive, ambient soundscapes with lovely melodies but also encompassing lots of detail and abstract sounds. In Part 1 the build-up is slow and drifts along nicely, until a contemplating and longing cello strings gradually awakes and is accompanied by the strumming of acoustic guitar to form a melody that progresses peacefully with bell tinkles and other textures in the background.

Part 2 starts with low hums of strummed guitar fused with a wandering pattern of synth sounds and a shimmering lead melody that chimes in and becomes the prominent element half-way into the song and plays off the recurring guitar strums, all the while a low, crackling sound lingers on in the background and slowly but surely over the course of the nine minutes or more becomes the sole, remaining sound that wraps up this lovely little gem, and should heighten everyone’s expectation for Beneva and Clark Nova’s imminent debut album, Sombunall, on the same label. Watch this space for a review upon release, but meanwhile, go get this ambient treat!
