Sónar-by-Day Friday - Nettle
Nettle
This cross-cultural band has a certain liberating feel to it. Nettle combine modern electronic equipment, represented by DJ/rupture, neo-classical instruments (electric cello) with classic instruments (violin) and local instruments (some sort of a bass guitar, the likes of which I have never seen before). The four musicians on stage combined their instruments in a harmonious way, not letting one instrument dominate the sound. The sporadic singing and melodic lines had a North African feel to it. Having said that, one did not get the sense of this musical project wanting to take on a tree-hugging costume and make the crowd chant anti-American slogans. This was a musical collaboration between different parts of the musical world. The result on stage was immense. The melodic chanting or violin playing of the elderly gentleman who’s name elude my memory at the moment carried this concert parts of the time, but to be frank it was not a single member of the group that caught the eye, it was rather the ease that four musicians with different backgrounds playing effortlessly together that fascinated.
